Just 4 games to go, and through a combination of good results from other games, and excellent play from us, we now have our chance to make the ‘Play-offs’ back in our hands….
JAVEA FOOTBALL CLUB STRENGTHEN WEST HAM UNITED TIES 1 July 2006
Head of West Ham youth development,
Jimmy Hampson, this week paid Javea a visit to attend a meeting between
Javea FC Commercial Director Mark Catlin, Javea FC player and coach
Jeff MacLean, and former West Ham hero, Kenny Brown, currently with
Torrevieja FC.
At the meeting Mark Catlin outlined the plans of Javea football club
to Jimmy for youth development in the area based upon the following
structure;
1) ALL kids, at all levels, boys and girls, Spanish or International,
to be encouraged to play and enjoy football.
2) Independent clubs within, and in the vicinity of Javea, are to
be given the support of Javea football club in running their clubs.
3) A new CD Javea soccer 7`s Sunday League for all ages to take place
from September and the independent clubs give this their full backing.
4) All coaches of the independent clubs to act as unofficial scouts
for Javea football club, the new Sunday league to be the breeding
ground for new talent.
5) Kids with the greatest talent and attitude to be invited to play
for Javea football club.
6) Javea football club kids with talent and the correct attitude given
the opportunity to experience football and coaching not only at Spanish
giants Valencia, Villareal, or Hercules, but now also at Premiership
club West Ham United.
Mark spoke openly about the plans for the future; “Our meeting
with West Ham United was a huge success, not just for Javea football
club, but for the whole of the Costa Blanca. For example Torrevieja
FC have been kept informed of developments from the start, and they
agree that the priority is the development of the kids and not allowing
any potential stars of the future slip through the net in this region.
Almost half the current crop of England stars were developed through
the West Ham youth system under the guidance of Jimmy Hampson. Players
such as Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Glenn Johnson, and
Jermain Defoe all benefited from his experience and knowledge. Don’t
get me wrong, the Spanish youth system is more than capable of producing
talent, but this outlet for us at West Ham adds another dimension
for both the International and Spanish kids, and trainers at the club.
We also talked about the possibilities of West Ham participating in
some of the areas youth tournaments and a select youth team from Javea
travelling to West Ham to play them in a friendly.” “The
people of Javea and surrounding areas should appreciate the support
and hard work of the Javea football club directors, especially the
president of CD Javea Juanjose Buigues Ortola, and the Concejal de
Deportes, Juan Ortolá Bás. Without their backing this
new structure for the area could not have been achieved. These are
exciting times for Javea football club, both on and off the field,
and I am desperate for everyone in the area to really get behind us
for the start of the new season. mark@cdjavea.com
Another positive week for CD Javea
began this week with an informal get together of the clubs new signings,
existing players, and Club Directors. A meeting at the ground was
followed by the signings and then everyone enjoyed a light meal and
drinks into the evening. The Club President, Juan Jose Buigues Ortola
spoke to the new players and told them just what was expected from
them this year.
CD Javea Commercial Director, Mark Catlin, believes these new players
have more than what it takes bring promotion for the club this year.
“These are excellent signings for us and strengthen the team
in every position. Personally I cannot wait for the start of the new
season and believe that at the very minimum we should make the play-offs,
beyond that it’s a bit of a lottery, but these signings give
us real strength in depth in all positions and if we do make the play-offs
then this strength in depth should give us a massive advantage at
the end of a long hard season. I have also been encouraged speaking
to our new signing Jeff Maclean, he has told me that of all the players
he played against this year, the ones that stood out and he admired,
we have signed. What we need now is for everyone to get behind the
team, especially supporters, and give them a real lift when we play,
both at home and away games. Season tickets are now on sale at only
€80, (€45 for OAP’s and Women) and this includes membership
of the clubs recently formed Penya (supporters club). The future success
of the club mainly depends on 2 things, the development of youth football
in the area, and the active participation of supporters in what is
their club. The structure now in place for youth football is excellent
and now I want everyone to really get behind us and support the team.”

POSSIBLE NEW BACKER FOR JAVEA FOOTBALL CLUB? 25 June 2005
CD Javea Commercial Director, Mark
Catlin, this week announced that the club was in advanced discussions
with UK Company, Exeter Friendly, about a possible major sponsorship
deal at the club. Talking exclusively to Round Town News, Mark spoke
frankly about the possibilities. “I can confirm that I have
been speaking up to board level with the key people involved at Exeter
Friendly. Initially I was contacted by Paul Martin of ‘Go Private’
a private health insurance company based here in Spain, and these
initial discussions have now escalated up to Neil Armitage, Marketing
Director for Exeter Friendly. The Chief Executive of Exeter Friendly,
Roger Cawse is due in Spain shortly to personally hold talks with
me. They are extremely excited about what is happening at the club
and from my talks so far they seem very positive about a long term
commitment to us. I have been keen to stress from the start that although
we are a local club we have ambitions far beyond this. As we progress
I anticipate that we will become a vacuum for International support
from as far south as Alicante and as far north as Gandia. Exeter Friendly
also see this and it would be a great deal for them to raise their
exposure throughout the Costa Blanca. These discussions may come to
nothing but reinforces to me the calibre of companies that the club
can attract.”
The latest move is seen as further evidence of the ambitions of the
club and its aim to achieve rapid promotion to the Spanish 2B league
within a 3 year period.
INAUGURAL JAVEA FC SUPPORTERS CLUB MEETING A HUGE SUCCESS 25 June 2005
Over 30 people attended the first
meeting of the International Javea FC supporters club (called the
Peñya in Spanish). The meeting was held at Bombers Bar at the
port in Javea on Thursday 23rd June.
Acting Peñya President, Mike Smith, heralded the start of what
will become the focal point for support for Javea Football Club. “Almost
everyone in attendance signed up for membership and the atmosphere
was terrific. CD Javea have granted us ‘official’ status
and backed everything we have, and are trying to achieve. We share
the goals and visions of the club and aim to become an integral part
of the success that is just around the corner. Our aims are simple,
we want to help the football club and the supporters that wish to
follow it. We are also in discussions with the club for discounted
tickets, merchandise, and will also be organising arrangements for
away game travel. I sincerely believe any supporter of CD Javea should
be a member of the supporters club.” The meeting decided that
Mike should carry on in his role as acting President of the Peñya.
It was also announced to the group that the Peñya website has
now been launched and can be found at www.javeamigos.com
.
Also in attendance at the meeting was new club signing, Jeff Maclean
and CD Javea commercial Director, Mark Catlin. Both were impressed
by the commitment shown by the fledgling group. Jeff commented “I
cannot wait for the start of the new season, having support behind
the team, both home and away will make a huge difference to us; I
feel that we are on the verge of something really special at this
club. There is a real buzz around everything we are doing at present.”

CD Javea Agrees Launch of International Soccer Youth 7’s League 3 June 2005
After much discussion and consultation,
CD Javea this week announced the formation of a new International
Soccer 7’s league to begin shortly after the start of the new
2005/6 football season. This is seen as further evidence of the clubs
commitment to bring all clubs, schools, and societies together and
enable all kids, regardless of background, ability, or nationality,
to play together, and hopefully fulfil their footballing potential.
It is envisaged that the new league will cover 4 age groups;
Benjamin (aged 8 and 9 yrs as of 1st Jan 2006 Born 96/97)
Alevin (aged 10 and 11 yrs as of 1st Jan 2006 Born 94/95)
Infantil (aged 12 and 13 yrs as of 1st Jan 2006 Born 92/93)
Cadete (aged 14 and 15 yrs as of 1st Jan 2006 Born 90/91)
This move is seen as the first of its kind almost anywhere in Spain.
New CD Javea player signing Jeff McLean is confident that the new
league will enable the most promising talents to progress, while at
the same time allow ALL kids to enjoy the experience of competitive
football. “A lot of work and research has gone into this, all
the key people involved in football in the area, both Spanish and
English, came together to formulate this league. League matches will
take place during Sunday morning to enable the most talented of players
to play for CD Javea which takes part in Provincial football during
Saturday, and at this level kids are openly being scouted by the bigger
clubs such as Villareal and Valencia. During Sunday’s we can
always keep an eye on all the kids and will be able to tell if any
of them have the ability to be moved on to that higher level.”
Gary Looker from FC Amigos is looking forward to the start of the
new season and it is hoped he will become a key figure in running
the new league. “We already have firm commitments from almost
every club and school, both Spanish and International, in Javea to
participate, as well as enquiries from the surrounding towns such
as Jalon, Teulada and Moraira and even as far a field as Benidorm.
The format for the league has already been tested with great success
this season with Eduardo Briones Alonso’s Alevin soccer 7’s
league based at Javea Port.”
Mark Catlin of CD Javea expressed the opinion that this is far bigger
than just football. “This new league provides an excellent opportunity
to integrate all kids, no matter where they come from, by playing
football together, it does not matter if they are Spanish, English,
German, or Colombian. My hope is that the camaraderie built between
the kids during Sundays will carry over, so that if they are out as
a group, on Friday night for example, there will be acknowledgement
and talk instead of any potential animosity.” “From a
football perspective all the key elements for a successful future
are now in place. CD Javea are throwing there full weight behind this,
including the use of the new pitch and stadium, and all facilities
at the ground. Local football coaches will assist in the development
of the kids at grass root level, brighter kids will progress into
the Spanish football system through CD Javea, and with our contacts
and links at top English Premiership and Spanish La Liga clubs, the
very best will now have every opportunity to go as far as there ability
and attitude allows.”
The new league is totally FREE to enter and open to all teams in the
region. If you have a team, or a child that would like to play in
this new league, then feel free to contact Mark Catlin on 901 888
666 (local rate) or email mark@cdjavea.com
CD JAVEA MAKES FIRST INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER SIGNING 19 May 2005
CD Javea Football Club this week finally
managed to secure the services of star football player Jeff MacLean.
After weeks of complex negotiations, Jeff, 26, put pen to paper, turning
down lucrative offers to play elsewhere in favour of being part of
the revolution sweeping through CD Javea.
“It’s amazing what is happening here. Once I knew CD
Javea were interested in signing me I turned down the chance to
play in a higher league. I want to be part of the future at this
club and involved not just as a player, but also assisting in youth
development and wherever else I feel I could contribute positively.”
Jeff has had a varied football career to date, starting at Manchester
United, then on to Bolton, Queen of the South, and Barry Town where
he experienced UEFA cup football, before moving to Spain with his
girlfriend, Sally.
Jeff has, and will, continue to run the Premier Soccer Academy
based at Benitachell, and intends to use this as a platform to further
develop kid’s footballing talents in the area.
At only 26 Jeff feels his best footballing days are still ahead
of him.
“If we do not achieve promotion this coming year then I feel
we would have failed. This club has the infrastructure in place
to rapidly progress through the leagues, if we can capitalise on
the outstanding youth talent in the area then there will be no stopping
us in the future.”
Commercial Director at CD Javea, Mark Catlin, expressed his delight
in securing Jeff for the 2005/6 season. “This is yet another
major step forward for us. We are only interested in players that
want to play for this club and Jeff falls into that category. He
turned down approaches from others offering more than double what
he is going to be paid here but he has said to me all along that
he only wanted to play for CD Javea, he has stuck to his word and
that means everything to me personally, and the club. Jeff knows
what we are trying to build here and I see him as an integral part
of our plans for the future.”
In just 3 months CD Javea have gone from being a ‘Spanish
only club’ to now having International representation on the
Board, at youth level, and now in the first team. Work totalling
€300,000 is about to commence on a new pitch that will give
CD Javea the best footballing facilities of any club within a 50KM
radius.
JAVEA FOOTBALL CLUB APPOINTS NEW COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR 21 April 2005
This week Javea football club announced
the appointment of a new Commercial Director,
Mark Catlin.
Mark 39, is the owner of the Spanish based telecoms company ‘Fonicatel’,
and is relishing his new role and believes CD Javea is a sleeping
giant in the football World. “At the moment the club is
in a league which is about on a par with the GM Vauxhall Conference,
maybe one league below this, but we definitely have the potential
to compete in the Spanish 2B League, the equivalent of the English
First Division, and this is our medium term target”.
The club this week announced an ambitious 5 year plan which they believe
will lead to Club Deportivo Javea becoming the premier football power
in the area.
Mark has been entrusted with the specific task of raising awareness
of the club amongst the International community in the Costa Blanca
region and Mark believes the future success of the club “rests
on the integration of International kids into the Spanish system”.
“When I first moved to Spain one of the first problems I encountered
was trying to find a club where my son then aged 8 could easily settle.
Luckily I found a club, The FC Amigos, based at the Port in Javea.”
“There is so much talent, both Spanish and International, in
the area, and CD Javea needs to capitalise on this if it is to fulfil
its potential.” “An essential part of my plan for
the rebirth of the club is the opening a football academy within a
3 year period.”
Mark stresses the point that making people feel that CD Javea is “their
club” is another key ingredient in any future success.
“At the moment CD Javea only attracts crowds of around 130,
I intend to at least treble this during the coming season. Almost
all the existing supporters are Spanish, this needs to be increased
and the International community needs to be involved at all levels,
from the kids leagues, through to supporters and ultimately to Board
Members”. “The perception in the International community
has been that CD Javea is a ‘Spanish’ only club and this
cannot be further from the truth” explains Mark. “Everyone
involved at the club is keen to welcome non Spanish input and ideas,
and my appointment underlines this fact”.
Mark is anxious to encourage other non Spanish involvement. “I
am desperate to bring other people in to help us achieve our goals.
I need a good commercial team with vision to push the club forward.”
“I have been assured that the Mayor of Javea and the Ayuntamiento
are 100% behind my efforts and everyone I come into contact with are
desperate for a successful future at the club”. “One
of my first tasks is to attract sponsors, and there are some excellent
sponsorship packages that I have already put together for potential
business customers.” “If business’s want to
be involved with the club then this is the ideal time to do it as
I am starting with a clean slate and some of the packages offer unbelievable
value for money”.
As an example Mark has been able to secure 500 free kids season tickets
from the club for the start of the new season and these will go on
offer in the next few weeks. “This is going to be a major
business opportunity for a company to sponsor a once in a lifetime
offer to 500 lucky kids. The sponsors’ name will appear on the
registration forms and also on each of the 500 tickets, this will
then be promoted through schools and newspapers so the exposure will
be huge. The sponsor will also have a board at the entrance to the
ground thanking them for there support. I am looking for a company
to come forward and put there name to this offer. I sincerely hope
the spirit of what I am trying to achieve is taken up by the people
in the area”.
Mark appreciates just what he has taken on. “I know it’s
a big job but I love football and can’t wait for the start of
next season. In addition it’s a fantastic chance for the International
community to mix with the Local population at least once a week”
“Ex British pro footballers such as Jeff Mclean have assisted
me greatly in gaining my position on the Board by giving me an insight
into how things run over here in Spain” “I intend
to push hard to see that the International community are represented,
not just off the pitch, but on it as well, as long as the Manager
believes that player will improve the quality of the team as a whole.
Mark agrees that Spanish Beurocracy can be a challenge. “When
I make a decision I like it done yesterday without a debate, the Spanish
love a debate and the saying ‘proximo semana’ is a pastime
of theirs”! “At the end of the day it is the culture here
in Spain. “The big plus is that I have found everyone very
friendly and accommodating, especially the President of the Club,
Juan Jose Buiges Ortola who has provided me with everything I have
asked for and has even taken numerous calls from me into the small
hours of the morning.”
Mark requires input from any football lovers or business people with
ideas. “There is just so much to do. I am looking for people
with contacts at UK clubs, potential sponsors, coaches, etc. to contact
me and get involved at the club. This is OUR club and I want to take
it as far as possible.”

INTERNATIONAL KIDS IMPRESS AT JAVEA FOOTBALL CLUB 20 April 2005
5 of International Football club ‘FC
Amigos’ most promising footballers have over the last few weeks
trained and impressed at C.D Javea Football club.
Jordan Knight (10), Max Elmes (11), George Laingchild (11), Michael
Nelson (10), and Jack Saberton (11), became the first of what is hoped
will be the integration of the areas most promising International
kids into the Spanish football system.
Amigos coaches Tony Knight and Gary Looker were impressed by the quality
of coaches and their teams. “This opportunity takes FC Amigos
to another level and Amigos kids with real ability can now progress
not just to CD Javea, but with their links onto regional clubs such
as Valencia and Villareal.” Commented Gary Looker.
Tony Knight was keen to stress the importance of not just ability
but attitude. “Each of these kids did us proud, it does not
matter how good a kid may be, if he does not possess the right attitude
then he will not progress.” “We have been keen to stress
this to all the kids at FC Amigos”.
With the help of FC Amigos, CD Javea, the Ayuntamiento, and countless
volunteers, the basis of a new league structure within Javea will
hopefully begin next season giving EVERY kid in the area the ability
to fulfil their football talent.
Mark Catlin, Commercial Director at CD Javea, is desperate to keep
up the momentum of what he believes will place the Javea area at the
forefront of sporting excellence along the coast. “Sport is
an International language. This is an exciting time to be involved
in football in Javea, and its surrounding areas, and we are looking
for ANYONE who loves football; kids, coaches, helpers, schools, regardless
of Nationality or ability, to come forward and become part of what
we hope will be the start of a fully integrated football structure.
If a boy, or girl, wants to play football then they will be given
every opportunity to play, regardless of ability. If this person then
shows talent they will then be moved through the system so that they
can play at a level which matches their talent.
If YOU want to be a part of this structure Mark can be contacted at
CD Javea on 901 888 666.
